Our History

How and when did we start?

Ms. Srabani Banerjee (SG) was determined to empower her daughter, Adrija, who has Down’s Syndrome, and help her become self-dependent. She also recognized the importance of sharing her challenges and experiences as a mother of a special needs child with other parents in similar situations. It was her heartfelt desire to work towards improving the lives of children with special needs. She aimed to create a platform for these children, providing them opportunities for mainstream education and vocational training. Before embarking on this journey, she ensured that she received formal training in methods for addressing learning disabilities and educating children with mental challenges.

We come across a long way

The journey of our educational institution began in 2001 with a small group of children, each around the age of two. The school was initially established under the name “LITTLE HUT.” Over the years, our vision and mission evolved, and on December 24, 2008, we officially changed our name to “TAGORE FOUNDATION SCHOOL KOLKATA.” This change also marked our registration as a non-governmental organization (NGO), allowing us to better serve our community.

From the outset, we embraced the Montessori method of education, which emphasizes hands-on learning, independence, and respect for a child’s natural development. This approach not only fostered academic growth but also nurtured the emotional and social skills of the children in our care. Importantly, the school was designed to be inclusive from the beginning, welcoming both children with special needs and those who were neurotypical. This diversity enriched the learning environment and promoted acceptance and understanding among all students.

The journey of TAGORE FOUNDATION SCHOOL has been supported by the generosity of many well-wishers who believed in our mission. Their aid—whether in the form of donations, resources, or volunteer time—has been invaluable in helping us create a nurturing place for learning and growth.

In addition to providing quality education, we focused on raising awareness among parents of children with special needs. We sought to educate them about their children’s unique circumstances, empowering them to advocate for their needs and fostering a sense of community among families facing similar challenges. Through workshops, support groups, and outreach programs, we aimed to provide resources and knowledge that would help these parents navigate the complexities of raising children with special needs.

Overall, our goal has always been to create an inclusive, supportive environment that celebrates diversity and promotes the holistic development of every child.
